This project is a product of a graduate-level course, English 697-01W Digital Storytelling, taught by Dr. Shannon Carter at Texas A&M-Commerce during the Winter Mini 2015. In that we live in an ever-changing technological world, the mode of telling our collective histories, as well as individual stories, is changing. To that end, the incorporation of various media presents not only more imaginative and creative ways to tell our stories, but challenges us to use images as metaphors, as representations, as symbols not only to convey meaning, but to allow the viewer to interpret the message through a more highly reflective process.
As creators of our digital stories, our challenge is to master the various medias and to meld them into a story that says more than the spoken word...more than the text. By sharing our individual experiences, we are able to tap into universal truths...such as "love has the ability to change the trajectory of our lives." As I searched for a topic for my first digital story, I was inspired by my son's love story and journey as much as I was inspired by his limitless tenacity and vision. I realized that my story was to be found in sharing these wonderful qualities as those that led him to find the love of his life. Although my story represents a limited point of view, I feel that it personifies those qualities that I admire most in him and I think that those who view this video will be uplifted and inspired to be tenacious. At least, that is my hope. I want to thank my son and his beautiful wife for their permission to share some of the details of their lives - as well as the use of their images - to tell the story.
As a student of digital storytelling, I can share that the process of introspection, finding a story that is meaningful, and then creating a story using this technology is one of the most exciting journeys that I have undertaken. Reading and viewing others' stories provides opportunities for recording and sharing our histories in ways that no other medium can.
So, go ahead...tell us...what's your story?
